Internship

To be honest I am nervous about starting my internship. I know that Year Up has prepared me enough to succeed in my internship but there is always that voice of doubt that makes me nervous. Such as if I make a huge mistake but I know that is just my nerves getting in the way. I hope I get a patient manager that is willing to show me some steps in how the office environment is. I am really aiming for my own desk in order for me to feel as if I have some sort of space. I am excited to be in a new environment and I hope that all of the people there are really nice. I know that I can show my eagerness to learn to others in the office and they can see the hunger that I have to want to be there.

New Years

On New Years day I slept all day, I had got sick on New Years Eve so all I wanted to do was stay in bed and sleep. I slept as if I had not slept for the past three days and I would only get up to eat and then I would go back to sleep. My New Years Eve was not as exciting as others but I am just glad that I made it to another year.

Christmas

I worked Christmas eve so I was at work till six then I went home and opened presents with my daughter. I watched my daughter play with her new toys for a long time which resulted in us going to sleep around one in the morning. Since, I had gone to sleep late I ended up being tired the following day therefore I slept most of the following day.

During the break

The activities that I did during my break was just work and sleep. This year was different then any other year because I would always take a trip to Los Angeles to visit my family and spend the Holidays with them. This year I focused on just working and catching up on my sleep. I bought some gifts for my daughter so watching her open them was fun because she wanted to play every toy.

What I learned about myself!

What I learned about myself as a professional is that I am an attentive listener and that I work well with others. When it comes to doing group work and presentations, I try to give my input as much as possible but at the same time not being to talkative in order to give others the opportunity to participate as-well. I surprised myself in how well a navigated in Microsoft Word, because in my previous experience in using Microsoft work was only to write papers but never to do Flyers of any sort.
My growth areas that I discovered in myself is that I need participate more in class. There are times in which I do participate when I am in class but there are other times in which I don't participate at all. I know that by me not participating at all in a classroom setting can lead for me to get lost in the background.

Internship readiness

What it means to be internship ready is being able to take any task at hand, be prepared and always have a positive attitude even though you might not like your surroundings. In order to be able to be internship ready is being able to keep on task and don't get easily side tracked from what you might be doing. The most difficulty I have had is time management. I know that their is no excuse for being late and there is other alternatives in avoiding such areas as not being on time. One thing that I have learned from Year Up is that being on time is considered late because if you are not in your sit by 8:30 then you are considered late. Being early is being on time because you have time to take out all of your materials and start your day.

My work experience

One job that I did not enjoy was being a Gardener. I was part of a nonprofit organization that gave jobs to youth in the Bay View Hunters point area of San Francisco. One of the jobs that I got hired for focused on making Bay View a more beautiful place to come. One main focus of the program was to plant native plants around the neighborhood in order to make it a nicer place to come. We started to collect seeds and plant them in nursery house, to later transplant them in areas of the neighborhood. I did not like the job because I would always get dirty, the shoes and clothes would not last that long. I met all kinds of neighbors that would come to visit our nursery specially the sluggish, weird looking and flying animals that the Garden attracted. The job was not enjoyable as much because of the insects but a skill that I developed that will help me successful at my internship is that I have seen the most unpleasant creatures that I can’t be grossed out as easily with what my job can present me with. I learned that anything is possible and that you can always learn something new every day therefore always keep an open mind.

One best job that I have had I must say it was being a waitress at a restaurant. I loved my job because I got to work around all kinds of people and I learned the behind the scenes of what happens when you go to restaurant. I learned how to make all kinds of drinks and other kinds of food like Omelet’s, crepes, and pasta’s that I was never introduced to. The perks about having that job were that I got to get free food on my lunch; our manager gave us the opportunity to choose anything from the menu from our lunch so I got to try everything in the menu. I loved my job as well because not only did I not get a bi-weekly check but in addition I received tips. The tips were like getting paid every day and helped with my transportation expenses and it as an easy way to start saving money. Some skills that I developed which will make me successful at my internship are quick customer service skills.  A lot of time we would get really busy so I had to work quickly and efficient providing all customers with satisfying service. I learned that it takes time to get adjusted but with the proper questions to a pundit and practice one can be great at what we do.
